Guest Lecture.

Nepali journeys - Anthropological perspectives on educational migration.
by Karen Valentin (Danish School of Education, Aarhus University)
4th of March, 2.30-4.30pm, Building 1412, Room 229

Departing from the notion of ‘mobile livelihoods’ the lecture will focus on the relationship between geographical and social mobility, specifically on the role of education in shaping geographical and social trajectories of young Nepali migrants In India in their pursuit of a better life in a context of poverty and political instability. The vast majority of the young migrants take up different forms of manual labour in order to make a living in India and,
if possible, to save money that can be sent to the family in Nepal. In some cases such work experiences also equip young people with new skills and competences which can serve as a platform for realizing the dream of moving further away towards, in particular, the Middle East and South East Asia. The lecture, thus, will cast
light on, firstly, the relationship between education experiences and motivations migrating; secondly, the importance of skills acquisition in order to make a living and to prepare future migrant life.
